Anne Terri's Question: In The Apostle's Creed, It says. Jesus descended into Hell. Did this happen?
There is much written on The Apostle's Creed. It does not appear in The Holy Bible.
It's a legend. However, it's believed that each Apostle wrote a section of it to make the whole.
The Catholic Encyclopedia has two versions listed in their notes. In one version of this unique prayer, it is written that ''He (Jesus) descended into hell.'' This is considered to be the modified version.
This copy is from The Church Of England and also states the same. Let it also be noted that in the Luthern Church the same line exists.
Book of Common Prayer
The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried,
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead,
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The holy Catholick Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.
Let's look at references from the King James Version of The Holy Bible to the Crucifixion.
In doing this research I've been doing comparisons between the first four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, to make effort to see if the truth can be found amongst their work. It's not easy for there are definite differences.
