God's Film Review: Beyond the Blackboard (God Through Anne Terri With The Holy Spirit)
Thanks to Stacey Bess, the homeless in Salt Lake City, Utah, are not forgotten. This is apparent, in the film based upon the truth, entitled, 'Beyond the Blackboard'.
The truth comes through Stacey Bess herself, and the documentation of her first hand experiences as a young teacher of the homeless. The film brings forward, her book, 'Nobody Don’t Love Nobody: Lessons on Love from the School With No Name'.
This is an eyeopener to those who have never entered into the arena of the homeless. Being homeless is an ongoing battle, one of woes and individual needs. To witness this first hand, you feel helpless. Humans down on their luck, come in all ages and educational levels.
Actress, Emily VanCamp, aptly plays teacher, Stacy Bess, who is about to take on her first teaching position. Her perception changes, when she realizes that her ideal classroom does not exist, and her students are more than expected.
In the beginning, she shows frustration with the system and herself. Frustration with the authorities, who have no idea what is happening in this makeshift school with no name. Frustration, in her inability to cope with this imperfect situation.
What is prominent is the lack of supplies; no desks, chairs, or books. Stacey, is presented an infested, dirty warehouse, attached to the homeless shelter which would serve as her first classroom.
Due to the living conditions, the ones who work at the shelter, must receive inoculations against various diseases, and be checked for lice. Stacey cannot be inoculated, for the shelter medical nurse has found out she is pregnant. She chooses to stay on as teacher, until the baby is born.
After receiving no assistance from the school system authorities, she decides to bring the classroom into order by herself. With her own funds, she buys supplies, begins cleaning, painting walls, and providing a better learning environment. Her students arrive in the morning hungry, and she brings a cooler from home filled with individual breakfasts.
She knows her students, need guidance, for their parents are struggling to keep afloat. She teaches the children in her own way, as feelings of frustration become words to be placed on the board; these adjectives substitute for books, and help teach the children to read.
At the site for the homeless shelter, many sleep in their vehicles; a few are given small rooms, when available. The nurse helps with medical needs. There is a communal room with a small television, and well worn furniture. This is not enough, for many homeless; there is the feeling of worthlessness and shame.
Yet, Stacey's senses a way to raise them up, and get them involved. She rings the bell, literally. Running through the parking lot every morning to awaken her sleeping students and parents, providing them with a newly renewed sense of purpose. An elderly grandfather of one student, becomes the volunteer art teacher. The parents begin to see the light, and provide more support and assistance.
Stacey's husband and family get involved, through summer school program, to bring a camp atmosphere to the children living at the shelter.
Stacey tries once more to seek help from the authorities, and one superintendent comes forward with the necessities for a proper classroom, taking on the school with no name, as his personal project.
The film ends with the birth of Stacey's next child, and hope for the future.
