ATMAN
In Hinduism, most believe in the 'eternal self'. The eternal self is what is your true essence, what is beneath the matter which is your body or temporary house for your Spirit.
The Hindus believe they are God's servant for eternity, and they see themselves as close to God. They strive for Spiritual perfection. Reincarnation, is another belief which helps them to see the mortal body as only temporary, and easily shed, and thus allows them to be able to continue to a higher level, in a new body, still serving God.
Atman is more Spiritual. The Hindu strives to detach themselves from the material world.
They see materialism as a trap, with their material body being an illusion, known as maya. Along with this, the eternal soul is trapped in matter, which is subject to feelings which are not desirable, such as greed. This is why they feel one must repeat their birth and death in reincarnation to reach the perfection desired by God.
The Hindu believes in destiny based on karma. The ultimate goal is to be relieved of the cycle of reincarnation, through their own perfection, where the are allowed eternal brahman, the Supreme, to become One With God.
There are various paths a Hindu may take to achieve this goal. As with Karma, We will touch briefly in another study on Dharma, the duty of the Hindu.
AMEN"
