God's Movie Review: Gladiator (God Through Anne Terri)
There is a Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy. Circus Maximus is Latin for the greatest circus. Circus Maximus is now, nothing more than an oval area of grass surrounded by stone ruins, where the famous arena once stood. This was built in the 6th century BC. Julius Cesar provided a place for the people, a place best known for chariot races and giving the spectators bread.
In the movie, Gladiator, the fictitious character, Roman General, Maximus Decimus Meridius takes center stage, as a man who fought valiantly for his child hood friend, now Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
He fought as the Legate of the Emperor's legion. He is later arrested when Emperor Marcus Aurelius dies.
Emperor Marcus Aurelius, actually reined in Rome from 161 to 180 AD, when he died. His son, Lucius Aurelius Commodus Antoninus became Emperor, in 180 AD, ruling till 192 AD when he too died. However, this part of the movie script has been embellished to fit with the Gladiator theme.
This is a well presented movie about what it was like to fight as a Gladiator in the time of the Roman Empire. The well planned time frame seems to fit, mixing truth with fiction, real people who lived in the time of the Roman Empire, and ones who never existed.
Good special effects, bring to life the arenas of the many Gladiators, and what they faced in fighting each other as prisoners of Rome, and vicious, wild, starving animals.
Below, please follow the link to My Word in reference to Gladiators, and their fight for freedom.
