THE OLD TESTAMENT
Leviticus 2:1-2 Aaron's Sons Priests Burn Meat Offering: Fine Flour, Oil, Frankincense
1: And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:
2: And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD:
Leviticus 2:15-16 Do Not Burn Firstfruits When Offered To The Lord- Salt All Offerings, Oil, Frankincense
15: And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon: it is a meat offering.
16: And the priest shall burn the memorial of it, part of the beaten corn thereof, and part of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
Anne Terri's Notes: The Song of Solomon, is written as a Love song. Jesus is later anointed with Spikenard by Mary. What does this tell us? For one, it is not used in burial customs. It is a strong, expensive perfumed oil, quite heady.
Canticles 1:12-14 While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell...A bundle of myrrh is my wellbeloved ... My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire....
12: While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
13: A bundle of myrrh is my wellbeloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
14: My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of En-gedi.

Canticles (The Song of Solomon) 4:13 Spikenard Frankincense and Myrrh
13: Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,
14: Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:
THE NEW TESTAMENT
Matthew 2:9-11 The Wise Men, The Star, gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
9: When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10: When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11: And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Frankincense
also called olibanum, is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes, obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae, particularly Boswellia sacra (syn: B. bhaw-dajiana), B. carterii33, B. frereana, B. serrata (B. thurifera, Indian frankincense), and B. papyrifera. The English word is derived from Old French "franc encens" (i.e., high quality incense).

There are four main species of Boswellia that produce true frankincense. Resin from each of the four is available in various grades. The grades depend on the time of harvesting; the resin is hand-sorted for quality.
About Myrrh
Myrrh, is like a resin. It is made from the dried sap of various trees, native to Yemen, Somalie and eastern Ethiopia. What is important to our study is that one of the common trees used to make myrrh, is native to Jordan. It's official name is Commiphora gileadensis, or the Balsam. Myrrh is not only an incense, but was used as an embalming ointment. The Eastern Orthodox Church uses the scent of myrrh in many of it's sacraments.
