The Gospel Of Matthew 17 and 18 In Comparison To The Gospel Of Mark 9
THE MOUNTAIN VISION
THE MOUNTAIN VISION
Anne Terri's Notes: In this first comparison, we need to remember that Matthew has not been up on the mountain. Mark, (who is surnamed- named John -Acts 12:12), is on the mountain. They were directed by Jesus, to tell no one of this vision. However, it is written in both Gospels.
Matthew 17:1-4 Miracle - Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, John and his brother on a high mountain
1: And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2: And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
3: And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
4: Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
5: While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
6: And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
Anne's Notes: In Matthew, 17:1-6, it is basically the same as in Mark 9, but in Matthew 17:5, and line 7, there is additional dialog added.
Matthew 17:5
5: While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Matthew 17:7
7: And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

Mark 9: 2-7 Miracle – Vision of Jesus' Transfiguration On Mountain
2: And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
3: And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
4: And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
5: And Peter answered and said to Jesus, *Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make
three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
6: For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
7: And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
***
Matthew 17: 8-13 After The Vision
8: And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
9: And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man,
until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
10: And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11: And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12: But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13: Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
Anne Terri Notes The Difference: In Mark 9:8-13, there is nothing mentioned about the meaning of the what these lines meant. It is written however, in Matthew 17:13
13: Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
Anne continued: Below, in Mark 9:10, it is written that Mark is still questioning what this means, but not in Matthew.
8: And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
9: And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen,
*till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
10: And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.
11: And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?
12: And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things;
*and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
13: But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come,
and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

The Old Testament Prophecies concerning John The Baptist
Malachi 3:1
1: Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 4:5-6
5: Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
Isaiah 40:3-11
3: The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4: Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5: And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
6: The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
9: O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
10: Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11: He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
Anne Terri's Notes: No where in any of these prophecies does it say they should behead, or kill this person whom is crying out in the wilderness. He is there to prepare the way of the Lord,
PETER – JOHN – JAMES DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Mark 9:14-16 The Scribes Question The Disciples
14: And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.
15: And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.
16: And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?
Anne Terri's Notes: In Mark 9, when they come down off the mountain this above is what Mark (John) has written as to what happened. Below, Matthew has seen things from a different viewpoint, and has chosen to place this after Mark's time line where the Casting Out of The Evil Spirt occurs. And the Parable like lessons taught by Jesus in Mark 9: 38-50, continues in Matthew18. This is compared at the bottom of the page, due to it being out of sync.
Below, This is all that is written of the Miracle of money in the fish, so we do not know if Peter found the money, as Jesus said. Mark does not document this miracle. It appears as an interlude, for in the next chapter, Matthew 18, the story continues much as it does in Mark 9.

MIRACLE OF MONEY IN THE FISH (Matthew 17 Only)
Matthew 17: 24-27 The Scribes Question The Disciples and The Miracle - Money In The Fish
24: And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25: He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26: Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27: Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
JESUS CASTS OUT A DIFFICULT SPIRIT
Matthew 17: 14-18 Jesus Casts Out A Difficult – Dumb Spirit
14: And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15: Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16: And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17: Then Jesus answered and said,
O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?
bring him hither to me.
18: And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
Anne Terri's Notes On Differences: Matthew's account is shorter than Mark's. This may indicate that Mark was the witness and Matthew heard it from him to be documented.
Mark 9: 17-21 Jesus Casts Out Difficult – Dumb Spirit
Mark 9: 17-27 Miracle: Jesus Heals Man's Son – Dumb Spirit
17: And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
18: And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
19: He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
20: And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
21: And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
***
Matthew 17:19-21 ''Why could not we cast him out?''
19: Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20: And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Anne Terri Notes Differences: In Matthew 17 vs Mark 9 there is different dialog. See above how it is written of Jesus referring to a grain of mustard seed. It is one of the famous quotes from The New Testament. I believe Mohammad believed in this quote as truth, but when he tried it himself, he found he had to go to the mountain. And below, this dialog is not there.
Mark 9: 28 - 30 ''Why could not we cast him out?''
28: And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29: And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
30: And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
CRUCIFIXION FITTING THE PROPHECIES
Matthew 17:12 The Son Of Man Suffer Of Them
12: But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Matthew 17: 22-23 The Son of Man- Betrayed and Killed
22: And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them,
The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
23: And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Anne Terri's Notes: Matthew 17:12; 22-23 and Mark 9:31-32, sticks out like a sore thumb, and does not fit what has happened after Jesus cast out the difficult spirit. It seems to have been added as a filler, after the Crucifixion. Could it be the Apostles were questioning what happened, and didn't understand as it said below? Why was it added here?
*Mark 9:31-32 Son of Man Is Delivered-Killed-Rises On The Third Day
31: For he taught his disciples, and said unto them,
The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
32: But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

2: And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3: And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4: Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5: And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

7: Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

Matthew 18: 8-9 If thy hand or thy foot offend thee...
8: Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9: And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mark 9: 33-50 A Dispute Amongst The Disciples – The Greatest and If Thine Eye Offend Thee ....
33: And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34: But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35: And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
36: And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
37: Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.
38: And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39: But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40: For he that is not against us is on our part.
41: For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
42: And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
43: And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45: And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47: And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
49: For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
50: Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Anne Terri's Notes: Mark 9:33-50 is not written as it is in the Matthew 19 version. However, Mark backs up what Jesus said in Matthew, that they had been disputing. The Parable taught by Jesus using the child and explaining, if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out .... is basically the same, but with two different endings. In addition, Matthew has two more Parables written that are not in The Gospel Of Mark. The Parable Of The Lost Sheep, and The Kingdom Of Heaven Parable: A King And His Servants.
Matthew 19: 13-15 Jesus welcomes the children, admonishing the disciples
13: Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14: But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15: And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
***
Matthew 18:14 The Father's Will - for little ones
14: Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
15: And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

Matthew 19: 16-22 Jesus Teaches Others On Eternal Life – The Commandments - Perfection- A Key to Heaven
16: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17: And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18: He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19: Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
20: The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21: Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22: But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN PARABLE
Matthew 19:23-26 A rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven / With God all things are possible
23: Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24: And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
25: When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
26: But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
