The Meaning Of The Word Adultery – Merriam Webster Dictionary
voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband. Also : an act of adultery
This has come from a 1,500 AC definition, Middle English, Anglo-French and Latin
The Original Text:
The Torah, from 850 BC, is where it is written of the original Commandments, including Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.
The Kells Monks transcribed this text in 800 AC, 1,600 years later.
Anne Terri:
Here we are on earth, approximately 2,850 years after Moses received The Ten Commandments From God.
What languages has it come through and how many translations from the original, and what was the original meaning at this time?
First, let us look at The Old Testament – Where is this explained by God through Moses?
In The Commandments, it stands alone, without any explanation.

Later, what is known as an evil acts being brought upon Israel, appears in Deuteronomy 22:22, however, this is just a piece of what they consider evil in women and men, and the word Adultery is not mentioned. However, later, The Lord in Leviticus 20:10 is very angry and gives Moses judgments, mostly of putting people to death for going against The Lord's Decrees. And in Proverbs 6:20-35, there is a lesson both in evil, and temptation of a woman, taught to the son.
Deuteronomy 22:22 (This chapter does not make it clear whether The Lord said this to Moses)
22: If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.

Leviticus 20:10 (This chapter begins with The Lord said to Moses:)
10: And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Proverbs 6:20-35
20: My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22: When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23: For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24: To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25: Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26: For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
27: Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28: Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29: So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30: Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31: But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32: But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33: A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34: For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35: He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Anne Terri: Adultery was taught in The New Testament, by Jesus Christ, and according to his definition in Matthew 19, it is a man who puts away his wife, without reason, and remarries. Jesus gives the only reason for someone being put away in a (divorce), as fornication. In fact, the definition of Adultery in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, actually should be for fornication. However, the exception of fornication, is not written in Mark 10:11-12 nor in Luke 16:18. And in John 8:1-11, it's about the near stoning of a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery.
When Jesus teaches in Matthew 5, after the Beatitudes, he gives examples of some of The Commandments.
Matthew 5:27-32
27: Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29: And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30: And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31: It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Matthew 19:1-12; 18
1: And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2: And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3: The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4: And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5: And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6: Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7: They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10: His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11: But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12: For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. [/color]
See Also Mark 10:11-12 , Luke 16:18, and John 8: 1-11 for comparisons.
Mark 10: 11-12
11: And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12: And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
Luke 16:18
18: Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
Anne Terri's Notes: In The Gospel of John, the only mention of adultery is written below. This woman has been taken in adultery .... in the very act. The way this is translated, I believe they caught her fornicating, with a Man, and she could have been divorced, or married to another at this time. Jesus forgives her, and does not condemn her either. It's about not casting stones at someone, when you have also sinned.

John 8:1-11
1: Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2: And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3: And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4: They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5: Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6: This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7: So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8: And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9: And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10: When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11: She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Anne Terri: I have a question. Why is she the one singled out. Should they not both be guilty, the man and the woman? And as we have seen, in The Old Testament, this is usually a death sentence. In The New Testament, this seems to intertwine with divorce laws of the time. It depends on where it is written in The New Testament.
