Anne Terri: I have done research on Saint Francis, as God Has Requested. His famous Creche, was done about 1220 AC, in Greccio near Assisi. The idea was that the people of the church could witness the birth of Jesus Christ, through this live display. It was simple, according to his biographer, Thomas of Celano. Only a straw manger was placed between a donkey and an ox. The first Creche, or Nativity Scene, was in front of the altar during a Christmas Mass.
There are many legends surrounding Saint Francis. One that speaks to me the most, is his love for animals, and ability to interact with birds. It is said he was surrounded by birds, who came to listen when he preached to them in the trees. This was witnessed one day, while Saint Francis was traveling with companions. There is a collection of these legends printed in the book, 'Fioretti' – translated as The Little Flowers. This is a quote from this book.
It is not know whom the author or authors are. This is what was said of these works in The Catholic Encyclopedia.

''My sister birds, you owe much to God, and you must always and in everyplace give praise to Him; for He has given you freedom to wing through the sky and He has clothed you…you neither sow nor reap, and God feeds you and gives you rivers and fountains for your thirst, and mountains and valleys for shelter, and tall trees for your nests. And although you neither know how to spin or weave, God dresses you and your children, for the Creator loves you greatly and He blesses you abundantly. Therefore… always seek to praise God.''

''Such a work, as Ozanam observes, can hardly be said to have one author; it is the product rather of gradual growth and must, as Sabatier remarks, remain in a certain sense anonymous, because it is national. There has been some as doubt whether the "Fioretti" were written in Italian in the first instance, as Sbaralea thought, or were translated from a Latin original, as Wadding maintained.''
