The Codex Sinaiticus: The Oldest Copy of The Old Testament and The New Testament
The Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest complete copy of The New Testament, was handwritten in Greek over 1600 years ago. This would place the age of this most important work, at approximately 400 years AD. It is said to be heavily corrected, but of most significant importance for the history of The Bible.
At this time, there is the Codex Sinaiticus Project, which intends to reunite the entire manuscript in digital form, so that the entire world can see it. Many experts currently work on this project.
There are four institutions which have held parts of The Codex Sinaiticus, who have assessed the manuscript's leaves in order to do an intensive investigation on the amount of work required for preservation. It is a long process, first requiring stabilization, and digitization. At this time, after London, Leipzig and St. Petersburg examined the Codex Sinaiticus, it is in the hands of St. Catherine's Monastery.
The Holy Monastery of Sinai has many names, including the earliest reference, The Monastery of The Holy Virgin. All refer to the same place, and this Monastery has a very important history in the world's religions.
Saint Catherine's Monastery – Nuweiba, Israel
Saint Catherine's Monastery, sits at the foot of Mount Sinai/Mount Horeb. The local residents of the village of Saint Katherine, call this mountain Jebel Musa. The Monastery is said to have been built on the site where God first Spoke to Moses from the burning bush. Saint Catherine's Monastery is continuously inhabited and is known for being the oldest of its kind in the world. Housed in Saint Katherine's, is one of the oldest large collection of illuminated manuscripts, which is second only to The Vatican.
The official name of what is now known as Saint Catherine's Monastery, is Monastery of the Transfiguration.
The Monastery Built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, on the site which already held a church earlier built by the Empress Helena in 330 AD. The roots run deep, for Byzantine Orthodox monasticism. Three Monotheistic religions hold this area sacred. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad, both Arab and Turkish leaders as well as Napoleon protected Saint Catherine's Monastery from damage.
What is reputed to be an original manuscript written in 623 AD, a message from the Prophet Muhammad, originally a part of Saint Katherine's Monastery extensive archives, was taken by the Turkish Sultan Selim, in 1517. The original is still preserved however, in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul. The Monks have a copy of it, for visitors to see in Saint Catherine's.
Muhammad Wrote- English Translation:
"This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them. Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.
No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims' houses. Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God's covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.
No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.
Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants. No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world)."
An interesting piece of history, where two Religions come together, is the conversion of a small Crusader chapel, which was within Saint Catherine's Monastery. Monks allowed its conversion into a mosque, between 1101 and 1106 AD. Later it fell into a state of neglect, but was restored in the early 20th century. On special occasions the local Muslims still use the mosque.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria: She was born as a pagan, and converted to Christianity. Saint Catherine of Alexandria spoke with Roman Emperor Maximinus, making the effort to show him the error of his ways, when persecuting Christians. She converted his wife, the Empress, and other pagan philosophers, who all eventually were martyred. She was tortured and killed in the 3rd century AD. There are many legends surrounding her death.
Later her name became associated with the Monastery. They brought her head and hand there for save keeping in the 10th century AD. This caused St. Catherine's Monastery to become a place for pilgrims to visit.

And now for what scholars are telling us.
Actual geographical locations of many biblical events are unknown. Scholars have offered many theories. There is no evidence to support this, including the exact mountain which is where Moses received The Ten Commandments.
The Monks are certain this is the correct site, they feel they have found Mt. Sinai.
