4: Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5: And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

7: And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.


1 Kings 12:8-9 he forsook the counsel of the old men ...consulted with the young men that were grown up with him...

8: But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9: And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

13: And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
14: And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.


1 Kings 12:15 the king hearkened not unto the people ...cause as from the LORD ... spake by;Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

15: Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.


1 Kings 12:16-17 when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not...the people answered...What portion have we in David?...the children of Israel...in the cities of Judah Rehoboam reigned over them.

16: So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David.
So Israel departed unto their tents.
17: But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

1 Kings 12:18-19 king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died...king Rehoboam ... flee to Jerusalem .... Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

18: Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19: So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

1 Kings 12:20-21 when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again...made him king over all Israel...none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only...Rehoboam...assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin... to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

20: And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21: And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.


1 Kings 12:22-24 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying...Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel...

22: But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23: Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24: Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me.
They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

1 Kings 12:25-27...Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim... said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David...then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me...

25: Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26: And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27: If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

1 Kings 12:28-33 the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold - said ...behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

28: Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

31: And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32: And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
33: So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

Shemaiah
was a prophet in the reign of Rehoboam (I Kings 12:22-24). He is venerated as a saint in the liturgical calendar of the Eastern Orthodox Church on January 8.

He is best known for two events:

Preventing Rehoboam from war with Jeroboam -- 1 Kings 12:22-24; 2 Chronicles 11:2-4;

LITERATURE I. The Name.

1. In Cuneiform:

The earliest mention of Jerusalem is in the Tell el-Amarna Letters (1450 B.C.), where it appears in the form Uru-sa-lim; allied with this we have Ur-sa-li-immu on the Assyrian monuments of the 8th century B.C.

The most ancient Biblical form is yerushalem, shortened in Psalm 76:2 (compare Genesis 14:18) to Salem, but in Massoretic Text we have it vocalized yerushalaim. In Jeremiah 26:18 Esther 2:6 2 Chronicles 25:1; 2 Chronicles 32:9 we have yerushalayim, a form which occurs on the Jewish coins of the Revolt and also in Jewish literature; it is commonly used by modern Talmudic Jews.

2. In Hebrew:

The form Hebrew with the ending -aim or -ayim is interpreted by some as being a dual, referring to the upper and lower Jerusalem, but such forms occur in other names as implying special solemnity; such a pronunciation is both local and late.

3. In Greek and Latin:

In the Septuagint we get (Ierousalem), constantly reflecting the earliest and the common Hebrew pronunciation, the initial letter being probably unaspirated; soon, however, we meet with (Hierousalem)-with the aspirate-the common form in Josephus, and (Hierosoluma) in Maccabees (Books II through IV), and in Strabo. This last form has been carried over into the Latin writers, Cicero, Pliny, Tacitus and Suetonius. It was replaced in official use for some centuries by Hadrian's Aelia Capitolina, which occurs as late as Jerome, but it again comes into common use in the documents of the Crusades, while Solyma occurs at various periods as a poetic abbreviation.

In the New Testament we have (Hierousalem), particularly in the writings of Luke and Paul, and (ta Hierosoluma) elsewhere. The King James Version of 1611 has Ierosalem in the Old Testament and Hierusalem in the New Testament. The form Jerusalem first occurs in French writings of the 12th century.

4. The Meaning of Jerusalem:

With regard to the meaning of the original name there is no concurrence of opinion. The oldest known form, Uru-sa-lim, has been considered by many to mean either the "City of Peace" or the "City of (the god) Salem," but other interpreters, considering the name as of Hebrew origin, interpret it as the "possession of peace" or "foundation of peace." It is one of the ironies of history that a city which in all its long history has seen so little peace and for whose possession such rivers of blood have been shed should have such a possible meaning for its name.

1 Kings 11:9-13 the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel...commanded him that he should not go after other gods - but he kept not - The LORD said. I will surely rend the kingdom from thee...will give it to thy servant...I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David..and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.

1 Kings 11:14-18 the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite..when David was in Edom, and Joab-was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom...Hadad fled...and certain Edomites of his father's servants...to go into Egypt;
Hadad being yet a little child...they arose out of Midian-came to Paran ...
took men with them out of Paran-came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh which gave him an house..victuals and land.

1 Kings 11:19-20 Hadad-favour in the sight of Pharaoh-he gave him to wife-sister of his-wife-Tahpenes the queen...
sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son.

1 Kings 11:21-22 when Hadad heard -David slept with his fathers & Joab the captain.. was dead,
Hadad said-Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.
Pharaoh said-But what hast thou lacked with me-he answered, Nothing-let me go in any wise

1 Kings 11:23-25 God stirred-another adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from-Hadadezer king of Zobah:
he gathered men unto him-became captain over a band, when David slew them of Zobah-they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein...
he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

1 Kings 11:26-33 Jeroboam-son of Nebat-Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant- mother's name-Zeruah, a widow-
he lifted up his hand against the king...this was the cause- Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father...
Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour-Solomon -made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph...
Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem-the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way-
he had clad himself with a new garment-they two were alone in the field-
Ahijah caught the new garment- rent it in twelve pieces - he said- Take thee ten pieces:
for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee...
Because - they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess... Chemosh the god... Milcom the god ...
and have not walked in my ways....as did David his father.

1 Kings 11:34-39...I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David...But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee-ten tribes...unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem...I will take thee-thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel...if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee...as David my servant did; that I will be with thee...I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.


1 Kings 11:40-43 Solomon sought ... to kill Jeroboam..
