CANAKYANITI
" Food, sleep, fear and sex are common between humans and animals.
Humans are superior to animals because of their sense of discrimination.
Without discrimination the humans are just like animals" (Canakyaniti-17/17).
" Food, sleep, fear and sex are common between humans and animals.

God/Brahman working with Vatsa Sridatta; It is derived from the commentary on the verse 5:15 of the Gita.
The LORD, herein using the term 'jantavah', has condemned human-beings, by saying that those persons, who do not attach importance to discrimination are in fact, animals, because without discrimination there is no difference between the two (human-beings and animals) . The great Canakya in his 'ethics of life' (17/17) has described the same as above. 'Hari Om' . "AMEN"

I would Say however, that I have Seen animals far above certain humans in their actions. Discrimination is not always used well, even if it is instinctive.
This post being intricate, Anne, include from The Bhagavad Gita 5, As It Is, Chapter 5:15-18 and The Srimad Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5:15-18, and the link to the Chanakyaniti-chapter-17:17 to accompany Vatsa Sridatta's alternate translation.

The Bhagavad Gita - As It Is Chapter 5:15-18
Bg 5.15 — Nor does the Supreme Lord assume anyone’s sinful or pious activities. Embodied beings, however, are bewildered because of the ignorance which covers their real knowledge.
Bg 5.16 — When, however, one is enlightened with the knowledge by which nescience is destroyed, then his knowledge reveals everything, as the sun lights up everything in the daytime.
Bg 5.17 — When one’s intelligence, mind, faith and refuge are all fixed in the Supreme, then one becomes fully cleansed of misgivings through complete knowledge and thus proceeds straight on the path of liberation.
Bg 5.18 — The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste].
Srimad-Bhagavad Gita by Swami Swarupananada Chapter 5:15-18
15. The Omnipresent takes note of the merit or demerit of none. Knowledge is enveloped in ignorance, hence do beings get deluded. 15
p. 129
16. But whose ignorance is destroyed by the knowledge of Self, that knowledge of theirs, like the sun, reveals the Supreme (Brahman).
p. 130
17. Those who have their intellect absorbed in That, whose self is That, whose steadfastness is in That, whose consummation is That, their impurities cleansed by knowledge, they attain to Non-return (Moksha).
18. The knowers of the Self look with an equal eye on a Brahmana endowed with learning and humility, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a pariah. 18
