Saint Efisio (Sagra di San Efisio) - (Research Prompted by Carlo Ferdinando/Documented by Anne Terri)
The Patron Saint of Sardegna, is Saint Efisio. The story is about a Miracle. In Sardegna, Saint Efisio is honored in a three day celebration where the people come to Cagliari, from all over the Sardinian island, to parade through the streets in traditional costume, and carry a statue of their famous Saint through the streets in a wagon pulled by oxen. The oxen too, are wearing decorations.
What is the story? Saint Efisius, was a Roman emissary. He was part of the Roman army as a commanding officer. The Emperor of Rome, Diocletian, who reigned in the third century A.D., sent Officer Efisius to Rome to topple the Christians. God intervened, with a Miracle, on his journey to Sardegna, by ship. Efisius saw the Vision of a Cross in the sky. He heard God Speak to him. God Had Another Mission In Mind, than to have Efisius take down the Christians. God Issued Efisius a Command, to do The Lord's Work in Sardegna.
Saint Efisius spread the Word Of God, in spite of Emperor Diocletian's constant efforts to make him stop. However, Flavian, the successor of Diocletian, was angry, ordering Efisius'arrest and execution.
The Saint Prayed to God, asking for the cities protection from evil, and Saint Efisius begged of God to Grant Every Prayer that was uttered within the city walls of Cagliari. They took Efisius prisoner. Unfortunately, he was martyred by a Roman Soldier; beheaded on a beach in Nora, 303, A.D.
Later, in 1652 the city of Sardegna was besieged by a horrible plague. The people, who had chosen Saint Efisius as their patron Saint, Prayed to him for help. It is said, the Miracle was, that he intervened between the plague and the citizens of Cagliari, rescuing them.
As it is with many Saints throughout history, their place of Miracles becomes a shrine for Prayer. In Sardegna, there is a church in Cagliari dedicated to him, as well as the place where he spent his time in prison. Even where he was killed, there is a shrine.

SAINT EFISIO -
by Carlo Ferdinando (on scene in Sardegna)
In most countries in Europe, the first of May is labor day and people stay home, and don't go to work in honour of work.
In the city of Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, the first of May is Saint Efisio day.
Saint Efisio, like Saint Paul, was struck by the sight of a shining cross in the sky, and that made him change from a Christian's persecutor to a devout Christian, trying to convert people to Christianity. His boss, the Roman Emperor didn't appreciate this, and he had him executed in Nora, about 30 km from Cagliari, somewhere in 300 A.D.
He had to wait many years before becoming famous, the way he is now. When the plague devastated Sardinia (and Europe) in the 16th century A.D., he was given credit for the end of this terrible pestilence that decimated the population of Sardinia.
Now every year, his statue is brought from his chapel in Cagliari, to Nora. This voyage takes three days. The voyage back (on the fourth day) takes only one. He is in a hurry to go back home, and rest till next year.
The parade starts with the "TRACCAS"; these are carts, pulled by two giant oxen and decorated with flowers. The oxen are also decorated. People wearing the traditional costumes, sit on the carts, singing, or not singing.
After that, many groups wearing the traditional costumes walk in the streets. Many are playing music with the "Launeddas" or "Sulitus", old musical instruments made of cane. Some people Pray. Some just say nothing , and enjoy the ride. Some of them wear shoes, some of them don't. They are very proud.
This year, 2011, for the first time, the relics of the Saint have been brought to Cagliari from Pisa, where they have been kept. They will put under guard, by the soldiers of the "Brigata Sassari", a very famous Sardinian special corps. Ironic they are called "Dimonios"; meaning Demons. The Prayers are sung in the Sardinian language and it is mostly a Prayer to the Holy Mary:
"Santa maria, Mama de deus
prega po nosotros e po is pecadoris.
Immoi e in s'ora de sa motti nostra."
Saint Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us and for the sinners
now, and in the hour of our death.
The translation, is obviously very approximate.
When the statue of Saint Efisio arrives at the end of the procession, people cover the street with flower petals, roses mostly.
It is a special day, and even cats and mice seem to have made Peace. As you see, it is possible to have Peace. If cats and mice can do it, we as humans should do much better than that.
The pictures have been taken by me, and it is true: cats and mice love each other.
AMEN''
