Anne Terri's Notes – John 19
In John 19:1-5, Jesus is taken by Pilate's soldiers, and he's made to wear a crown of thorns, a purple robe, and is beaten. He's hailed as King of the Jews. At this point, Pilate finds no fault with Jesus (John 19:4) But why beat him, and then say I find no fault? This is torture.
John 19:1-5 Jesus Scourged,Crowned With Thorns King Of The Jews
1: Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
2: And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3: And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
4: Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
5: Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
Remember this from
John 18:35 What Hast Thou Done?
35: Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
John 18:35 What Hast Thou Done?
35: Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
John 19:6-11 You Crucify Him, For I Find Not Fault In Him ... The Jews ... he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God
6: When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7: The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8: When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
9: And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10: Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11: Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above:therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

John 19:12 Whosoever Maketh Himself A King
12: And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but The Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
John 19:13-16 Preparation Of Passover-Sixth Hour-The Jews call for Jesus to be Crucified
13: When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14: And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15: But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16: Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
Anne Terri's Notes: In John 19:14, John gives us the time and the day, for it was the preparation for Passover.
Comparisons to Passover times listed in The New Testament for Jesus'
MATTHEW
Matthew 26:17-20 The First day of the feast of unleavened bread (Passover)
17: Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
18: And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand;I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
19: And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

MARK
Mark 14:1-2 (Passover in Two Days – Seeking Jesus To Put To Death)
1: After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.

Mark 14:12-17 (Preparations For Passover Meal)
12: And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?
13: And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
14: And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
15: And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
16: And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
17: And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
LUKE
Luke 22: 1-6 Passover Is Nigh - They seek to kill Jesus
1: Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
2: And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
3: Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
4: And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
5: And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
6: And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
Luke 22:7- 8 When The Passover Must Be Killed

Anne Terri: John has made the effort to point out many things for the future readers as to what has happened.
What John has given us, is a key. The Jews have made it fit the Prophecy. I will place these sections in Red Text. I'm separately placing these sections into categories. I feel that Pilate has had quite enough, when he speaks to the chief priests in John 19:22, Jesus never said he was King of the Jews.
John 19:17-22 The Place and the words on the Cross, written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin
17: And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19: And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20: This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21: Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22: Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
John 19: 23-24 (The Soldiers Gamble For Jesus' Garments Fitting The Prophecy)
23: Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24: They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Anne Terri's Research: This is on the parting of raiments at the cross as part of fulfilling the prophecies. This appears in Psalm 22: 16-18. It also speaks of piercing hands and feet.
I thought it interesting to note, the first part of Psalm 22:1: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? ....
....And this is not written in the book of John as what Jesus said.

Psalm 22: 16-18
16: For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17: I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18: They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
16: For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17: I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18: They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
John 19:25-30(Jesus' Family and Disciple John – Witnesses At The Cross)
25: Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26: When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27: Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28: After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29: Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30: When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
he said, It is finished:
and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Psalms 69:21
21: They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
21: They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
John 19:31-37 (Breaking Of The Legs/Jesus' Legs Not Broken/Piercing Spear/Fulfilling The Prophecy)
31: The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32: Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33: But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35: And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36: For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37: And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Anne Terri's Research: On prophecies fulfilled - Jesus' side being pierced: It is as written as pierced in Zechariah 12:10, but also in Isaiah 53:5, as part of the famous passage known as the suffering servant, it depends on where you read the translation. In the King James Version, of The Holy Bible, the word, 'pierces' becomes 'wounded'. In The New International Version, the word is 'pierced'. Jesus fits perfectly the Sacrifice of Passover, and they did not break his legs and made sure he was removed before morning. (Num 9: 10-13)
Numbers 9:10-13: The Laws Of The Passover Sacrifice
10: Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto the LORD.
11: The fourteenth day of the second month at even they shall keep it, and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
12: They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.
13: But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the LORD in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
Zechariah 12:10 (Prophecy Fulfilled)
10: And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
Isaiah 53:5 (New International Version)
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
John 19:38-42 (Joseph of Arimathaea claims Jesus' Body For Burial and Nicodemus brought a mixture of Myrrh and Aloes)
38: And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39: And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40: Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41: Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42: There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
Anne Terri: If you notice, I have said nothing after John 19:17. For me this is a most difficult passage to read for the Crucifixion Comparisons, and John's Study Guide. However, I wish to point out differences. This is the only place in The New Testament where the following is written in this fashion. The breaking of the legs of the thieves and not Jesus' legs, as the prophecy being fulfilled, and the piercing of Jesus side with the Spear.
John is close to Jesus, many thinking of him as his half brother, because Jesus literally gives his Mother to John and he to her, at a time they both need comfort. Also, Mary, Jesus' Mother is there with her sister, but she remains un-named at this time.
In John's text, Joseph of Arimathaea is a secret disciple, another man, afraid of the Jews. The mixture of myrrh and aloes, is documented for the anointing of the body, and that Jesus received a hasty Jewish burial, in a clean tomb at the Crucifixion site. I have a question. Why would Mary of Bethany be anointing Jesus for his burial pre-arrest, when this is when the anointing happened? They would have followed procedures of Jewish Tradition.
I have done the research, as Jesus has requested of me, and it's now a complete Guide.
