The history of Pope Urban VI, is intricate. Let us look at a time line
City of Birth: Naples
Trained in Avignon.
March 21, 1364 consecrated Archbishop of Acerenza in the Kingdom of Naples
1377, one year before being elected as Pope, Bartolomeo Prignano became the Archbishop of Bari.
Pope Gregory XI, his successor dies, and a new Roman pope is demanded, for the Cardinals were undergoing pressure not to have the Papal seat to remain in Avignon.
April 7, 1378 the Conclave opened, strongly influences by the Roman public.
At the Conclave there were four Italian cardinals, and five French Cardinals, and seven of the Limoges
Even with opposition from one of Limoges cardinals, they had not the power to bring their candidate forward, against the Italian and French who banded together to oppose them.
April 8, 1378 Bartolomeo Prignano, was quickly chosen, unanimously.
At this time, Bartolomeo Prigano took the name Urban VI
This event is infamous, for it is said to have been the shortest conclave in history. French cardinal, Robert of Geneva, resigned his candidate to favor Prignano, as did Pedro de Luna, who was Robert of Geneva's successor in the See of Avignon. At this point, Prignano became more likely to be elected.
At least, he was Italian, even if he were not from Rome. There were those seeking to undermine the plan, and when they arrived to the Vatican, the people stormed the palace making demands with force that asking for a promise that an Italian pope be elected.
Cardinal d'Aigrefeuille refused, telling them they could not concede to these demands. The people who had gone into the Vatican to make their feelings strongly known, remained in the Vatican throughout the night. It is said they drank wine and cried. the disappointed people remained in the Vatican the whole night, drinking the wine and crying: History tells us that the next morning, the tocsin was rung and also at the same time the bells of Saint Peter. At this time the cardinals were attending mass, and they were afraid. They were told to be quick and to choose as the people wanted, a Roman or Italian. They were warned by the conclave that they should not resist, for they were also afraid of a major uprising.
However, Pedro de Luna (Benedict XIII) brought forward his own choice for pope, the Archbishop of Bari. He claimed he was the perfect choice for he was mature, saintly and mature. The other cardinals kept their choices private, waiting to see if the one who opposed the Archbishop of Bari as pope, cardinal Orsini, would swing his vote to Prignano.
Then, they asked Prignano to go to the Vatican along with several others who were prelates so that the people would not see who was chosen.
They still were uncertain how the crowd would react, and waited until after breakfast. They again took their vote, establishing Prignano as the next pope. Orsini made the announcement that a new pope had been chosen but he did not tell the people who.
Now the people guessed who had been named. Finally, Prignano reached the Vatican and he accepted
his position of pope.
Remember, Pope Urban VI was not yet a cardinal when chosen, and many did not know who he was. After he was chosen, most of the Cardinals ran from Rome in fear that he people would hear that their new Pope was not a Roman. According to Ludwig Pastor (1854-1928) an important Roman Catholic writer on the History of the Popes, Pope Urban VI did not show the typical Christian gentleness nor was he charitable. Pope Urban was against any reform of The Roman Catholic Church. He also raised four of his family into higher positions, which was within his powers as Pope. Through him, his nephews became cardinals.
On the French side, there were arguments as to the election of Pope Urban VI. They began to work against him. He became full of himself, and unreasonable after being chosen as Pope. It was quickly becoming thought by the Cardinals, who were often challenged by Pope VI, that he may be ill with his own power, or perhaps he had gone mad. This was partially due to the fact that he did not allow them to receive anything extra from the rulers of the land, or luxuries, from outside. He refused also, to go again to Avignon, which upset the French.
Now, five months later, the Catholic church is divided, with the French Cardinals seeking to do in Pope Urban VI. They invited him to Anagnai in Italy, but he was afraid for his life. There, the Cardinals, on August 9, 1378 met without him, and together they made a list of grievances against the validity of his election. It is important to note that at this meeting there were no cardinals present from Italy.
Robert of Geneva (1342-1394) (Anti-) Pope Clement VII.
Was elected by the French cardinals after they opposed Pope Urban VI. He would be in Avignon, not Rome. He is the first Pope of Avignon who was elected as an anti-pope of the Western Schism.

He it is said he authorized the massacre of 4,000 people who were civilians, when is why he became known as butcher or executioner of Cesena!
September 20, 1378 elected Pope at fondi by French cardinals, and was later named as anti-pope.
